"I've Already Done Years of Therapy" — Why Talk Therapy and Hypnotherapy Solve Different Problems
Updated: Aug 26

It's one of the most common things I hear on a first call: "I've already been in therapy for years. I understand exactly why I do what I do. I just... still do it."
If that's you, I want to start by saying something that might sound surprising coming from a hypnotherapist: your years of therapy weren't wasted. Talk therapy is a genuinely powerful tool, and if it's given you insight, language, and a safer relationship with your own story, that matters. This article isn't about therapy being wrong. It's about why understanding a pattern and changing a pattern are two different jobs — and why one modality is built for the first, and another is built for the second.
Understanding Lives in a Different Place Than Change
Here's the honest, slightly uncomfortable truth: you can know exactly why you keep choosing unavailable partners, or undercharging for your work, or freezing right before a big opportunity — and still keep doing it. If insight alone were enough to change behavior, therapy would have a 100% success rate for anyone who stuck with it long enough to fully understand their patterns. It doesn't, and that's not a failure of therapy. It's a clue about where these patterns actually live.
Psychologist Daniel Kahneman's research on decision-making points to something important here: a huge share of our choices, reactions, and behaviors happen automatically, before conscious thought even enters the picture. Your beliefs about love, money, success, and your own worth were largely formed before you were seven years old — long before you had the cognitive tools to evaluate whether they were true. They don't run in the part of your mind that talk therapy primarily works with. They run underneath it, in the subconscious, quietly steering the wheel while your conscious mind is busy narrating the ride.
That's why so many of my clients arrive having done real work already — therapy, coaching, books, retreats — and say some version of: "I understood everything. I just never really changed."
Why Hypnotherapy Works at a Different Level
Talk therapy primarily engages your conscious, analytical mind: the part that reflects, reasons, and builds narrative understanding of your life. That's genuinely valuable work. But it isn't the part of you that's actually running the pattern.
Hypnotherapy works differently. Through a relaxed, focused state of trance, we bypass the analytical mind's usual filtering and work directly with the subconscious material underneath — the beliefs, the emotional charge, the "if this, then that" logic that was built long before you had a say in it. Instead of talking about the pattern from the outside, we go to the level where the pattern was actually formed, and work with it directly.
This is also why change through this kind of work tends to happen fast, and tends to stick. You're not trying to out-argue an old belief with a new one — a battle your conscious mind will lose every time it's tired, stressed, or triggered. You're going underneath the argument entirely, to where the belief itself gets released and rewritten.
What This Actually Looks Like in a Breakthrough Session
In a Breakthrough Session, we spend real time — hours, not minutes — first understanding your history the way a good therapist would: your stories, your patterns, the language you use without noticing. But then we go a step further. Using Mental and Emotional Release Therapy® (MER), clinical hypnotherapy, and EFT, we work directly with the subconscious beliefs we've identified — across the personal, generational, and transpersonal levels — to release them at the root, rather than continuing to talk around them.
You leave with something most modalities don't offer: a visual map of exactly what was running underneath your patterns (your Belief Tree), and a felt sense that something has actually shifted — not just a new way of describing the same stuck place.
A Both/And, Not an Either/Or
To be clear: this work isn't a replacement for licensed medical or mental health care, and I'm not a licensed psychologist or psychotherapist — hypnotherapy is a complementary approach, not a substitute for it. For many people, the most powerful path is both: therapy for ongoing support and processing, and this kind of intensive subconscious work for the patterns that talking alone hasn't been able to shift.
If "I understand it, I just can't change it" sounds familiar, that's usually not a sign you need more insight. It's usually a sign you're ready to work at a different level.
If this resonates, I'd love to talk. Book a free 30-minute consultation and let's explore whether the Breakthrough Session is the right next step for you.
